Caston is a small East Anglian agricultural village situated some 18 miles south-west of Norwich, the capital city of Norfolk. While there is some beef cattle here the main industry is arable farming - currently sugar beet, wheat and barley but this changes as the crop prices vary.
To the immediate north, some 4 miles away is Watton while Attleborough lies eight miles to the east with Thetford some 13 miles to the south. The map below shows our location. Use the + and - keys to zoom in and out.
Caston consists of approximately 200 dwellings with a population of around 480 (Census 2021). That is up 0.81% since 2011. There are no retail businesses within the village. The latest round of post office closures saw the demise in 2008 of what was the part-time post office that operated from the village hall just two mornings each week. The Red Lion public house, however, which closed in September 2007, reopened its doors in November 2011, following extensive refurbishment.
The village hall, having been totally refurbished from ceiling to floor, has also taken on a new lease of life with many more activities now taking place there on a regular basis. The most community based of these being the weekly coffee mornings which have become a real social meeting place for many of the village residents. The village hall is a charity in its own right and managed by its own trustees separate from the parish council.
The parish council consists of the Chairman and six councillors. They meet at the village hall, on the 1st Monday of every month with the exception of August. Ample time is given for public participation towards the start of each meeting and the public are encouraged to attend.
